Just to follow up with the Still Photographs, the above picture is from a collection known as "Witness" by photojournalist James Nachtwey. You can find his collection at http://www.jamesnachtwey.com/ and I've also put a link to it under my "favorite links" on the right hand side of this blog. Certainly, taking any photos after viewing his powerful work was intimidating. I made the mistake of studying his collection alone when I wasn't in a particularly cheery mood to begin with. His words are compassionate and his work is courageous.
"I have been a witness, and these pictures are my testimony. The events I have recorded should not be forgotten and must not be repeated." - James Nachtwey
Many of the photos that I studied from the links online were hauntingly depressing. Being tasked with taking my own photographs was definitely intimidating. I tried to keep an open mind and ventured on campus with my cannon. I had a vague idea that I wanted to focus on nature because the weather was very nice that particular day. I noticed that UNH has been keeping up with its landscaping and plots of beautiful flowers. The wind was steady and I didn't like the pictures that the cannon was taking so I actually pulled out my Android phone and snapped about fifteen photos throughout the day. I was able to hang around and follow certain bumble bees as they moved from flower to flower.
Just a quick note, I'm going to try and catch some of the UNH women's soccer game today at 1 PM. Their record is 2-2-2 so statistic wise it is an important game. Hopefully the rain holds out. I am going to bring the cannon with me, but I'm not sure if I'll capture anything of value.
let me start off by saying how much I just love technology (and the fact that this is typed so you can cannot detect my facetious undertone). Yesterday my new Apple laptop arrived in the mail, I'm still getting over my buyer's remorse and trying to rationalize it as a sensible "investment" that will hopefully last me a couple of years. This afternoon I thought I'd pull it out and start my Apple relationship (I've yet to have one). Within an hour I'm back on my archaic HP that can't run without its power cord typing this very first blog entry. Something didn't quite mesh between my new Apple and Picasa. It wouldn't register my RSS feed.
Anyway, setting up my blog this week has easily been the best assignment I've been charged with upon returning to college. I have had some experience with Blogger in the past, running my own personal blog for a couple of months. Running a blog takes an unwavering amount of dedication and has to be your number one priority. I am also familiar with Wordpress which is just another platform to create and manage blogs.
I was especially affected, in class and on my own, by the project known as “Witness” by James Natchwey. His work is quite simply haunting. I included his link in my blog under my favorite links. I am both excited and anxious when I contemplate the possibilities of this class and my blog. My anxiety pools from the fact that I feel like Blogger has numerous untapped resources. I’d really like to get my twitter account back up and running. I think that would make maintaining a blog more convenient. Picasa is also new for me. The jury is still out. My Android phone ended up taking better quality pictures than the cannon camera, which also makes me nervous because I am without another one.
Note: I am still considering story ideas for a final project. Having so many options and little direction makes it harder.
